A Brief History
The property on which Top O’ Tobago lies is locally owned and well established on the island. It has been operating since 1992. When the land was purchased from the owners of the original Arnos Vale Estate lands, it was mostly "“bush” and was considered “pioneering land”.
The design and architecture of Top O' Tobago were lovingly created by the current owners, who wanted to design a retirement vacation home for themselves, friends and family as well as have it open to guests. The design of the buildings and landscaping of the property aim to achieve a close harmony with nature. With over six acres of land, only a small area has been built on, on the crest of the hill, to take advantage of the spectacular views and wonderful breezes. The remainder of the land is for agriculture and nature trails. Much is also left as original virgin forest. This gives Top O’ Tobago a unique sense of quiet, privacy and seclusion.
First came the planting of trees: citrus, flamboyant, immortelle, cashew, cedar, avocado, breadfruit, palms, ornamentals, cassava and bananas. The building followed shortly after, in 1994. The pool, Main House and Cabanas were built first. Patios were added at different elevations to control erosion, plus comfortable gazebo patios behind each cabana. Major renovations were undertaken in 2005 and 2006 including a spectacular stone retaining wall over 250 feet long and ten feet high running along one driveway. A new master bedroom and renovations to the main house were added and have enhanced the property, as have upgrades in appliances and the fine crafted mosaic tables around the villa. The property can be seen in completion today – no further building is planned.
Management is primarily a family undertaking. The previous managers were the parents of the owner. For the past five years the property has been managed by the brother of the Canadian owners. We take special care to relate to the local economy employing local staff and tradesmen and manage the environment responsibly.
