Activities
At Top O’ Tobago relax during the day by bird watching, hiking, and strolling along the well maintained nature trails or explore the bamboo patch where you can be lulled to sleep on the bamboo bed by the gentle clacking of the green bamboo swaying above your head. Curl up in a hammock on the gazebo of your cabana or “lime” by the pool with other guests, sunbathe or just choose a book from our well stocked library and enjoy yourself. Spend some time in the mango grove down in the gardens where a seven circuit labyrinth has been developed for walking meditation and contemplation.
The tropical gardens are full of tropical fruit trees including a citrus orchard of oranges, grapefruits, limes, lemons and mandarin oranges, avocados, pineapples, star fruit (or “five fingers”), bananas (or “figs” as they are known locally), breadfruit, pomcythere, custard apples, guava, plums and cherries - also different root vegetables such as cassava and dasheen. There is also a remnant of sugar cane from the colonial days when the area was part of the larger Arnos Vale Plantation. Fruits in season are available to all our guests to enjoy.
Top O’ Tobago is well placed to be at one of the most serene and beautiful parts of Tobago but only a short distance by driving to supermarkets, fine dining restaurants, nightlife, the airport and of course the nearby friendly village of Plymouth. Plymouth has a long history dating back to 1628 and is now famous for the Annual Plymouth International Jazz Festival held every year in April.
It is truly amazing that on such a small island there are so many things to do if you wish. The manager at Top O’ Tobago is available to make suggestions and give directions or make reservations. There is an assortment of pamphlets and maps at the Villa to plan out your holiday or you may just like to explore. People are very friendly to give directions if you feel lost. For up-to-date activities and great music tune into FM 92.7 Tambrin Radio when touring around the island. You will also see many advertisements on the road junctions promoting different events and also a car occasionally passing by with loud speakers to broadcast events.
Visitors to Tobago will find the island is relatively quiet and serene because most people retire early and rise very early to take advantage of the cool mornings. If you want non-stop partying and activities, Tobago may not be your best destination. Tobagonians love to “lime” which means to just hang out with friends on the verandas of their homes, at the beach or on a street corner drinking a few beers or mixing some rum and cokes from a bag with ice at their feet. They love to talk about politics, current topics and village life. Tobago is a place where everyone knows everyone and they are probably related as well! For those who do want to experience nightlife, they will not be disappointed. Nightclubs like “The Shade”, “The Deep”, “Bar Code”, “The Signature Lounge”, and the famous Buccoo “Sunday Skool” are all places to catch the local vibe.
There are many water sports such as parasailing, ocean kayaking, deep sea fishing, catamaran sailing tours, surfing, wind surfing, water skiing and Jet Ski rentals. Tobago is an excellent place to scuba dive and there are many outfitters to choose from. Divers can get their PADI certificate and experience advanced drift dives as well as beginner dives. There is even a ship wreck to explore.
On land, guests may enjoy a round of golf at the island’s two golf courses or explore by hiking some of the old tracks left from former times. There is an off-road adventure safari offered by one operator that is very exciting. A mountain biking tour group can be arranged for different levels. Hiking to waterfalls is a great adventure and the lushness of the forest is very invigorating. Tobago boasts the oldest rain forest in the Western hemisphere dating back to 1764. Here you will enjoy informative hikes by qualified guides. Birdwatchers will be astounded at the variety and beauty of the island’s birdlife.
